Jeep Wrangler: an American Icon

The Jeep Wrangler is an American icon that has stood the test of time. For a vehicle to have such longevity  is impressive in a nation where a “cool” car becomes dated in less than a year. The Wrangler name was put into production in 1986; however the Wrangler design is a product over half a century in the making. The early WWII Jeeps were primitive forms of what would become one of the most recognizable vehicles in the United States, the Jeep Wrangler. It is sold at Chapman Jeep because it is practical, relatively affordable and has won multiple 4×4 of the year awards.

The Jeep Wrangler is the current stage of what was once the Willys MB U.S. Army Jeep. It got its name Jeep from the U.S. Army mechanics that used to call an untested vehicle a “jeep”. Hundreds of thousands of 4×4 army Jeeps were made for the Allies of WWII. After the war, the model was converted to the Willys “CJ” which stood for Civilian Jeep.  The model was updated often until it became the CJ-8. The success it saw in transitioning to civilian models caused it to be purchased from Willys by the then American Motor Company, which would later become Chrysler. Once the acquisition was made in 1986, AMC began mass-producing these vehicles under the new nameplate the Jeep Wrangler.

The American Motor Company began to convert the Jeep into a more comfortable vehicle in order to attract everyday drivers and not just a niche crowd looking for a military grade 4×4. The plan worked and the Wrangler replaced the CJ successfully. A decade later the Wrangler was winning prestigious awards such as 4×4 of the year, and about a decade after that it was named one a Business Week “Top 20 Most Iconic Cars” of the last 20 years.

There are a few reasons the Jeep Wrangler has been able to defy the odds and stand the test of time. One, the Wranglers ability to adapt to the times allowed it to transition from a military truck to a customizable, versatile and comfortable civilian vehicle. Another reason is its ability to retain value. The Wrangler retains value better than almost any vehicle in history. Finally, it has become an American icon in the same way the Yankees have become an icon associated with America. The name itself has become synonymous with what America is about.
