Just when people thought the news about the 2017 Jeep Compass couldn’t get any better, the company has released details about its engine. At the recently completed 2016 LA Motor Show, Jeep shared additional information about the Compass’ powertrain and technology that will make it top the Renegade and rival the Volkswagen Tiguan. Jeep buyers worldwide will be able to choose from five engines, two diesel and three petrol, and three different gearboxes.

The 2017 Jeep Compass’ entry-level petrol engine is the same 138 bhp 1.4-liter MultiAir 2 turbo used by the Renegade, the new Compass’ smaller sibling. The company hasn’t indicated which engines will be available in the UK, but many insiders think it will be the 1.4-liter. U.K. buyers will be able to pair that engines with one of three gearboxes. On 4×2 models, the standard will be the six-speed manual and buyers have the option to choose a six-speed automatic transmission. The 4×4 models will all have a nine-speed auto box. In other markets around the globe, buyers can also choose the 2.0-liter Tigershark unit or the 2.4-liter MultiAir 2 destined for the US market. The 2.4-liter engine should sport plenty of power, and you can find out for yourself in a few months at Chapman Chrysler Jeep.

Jeep’s two diesel engines being offered on the 2017 Compass include the 1.6-liter MultiJet engine that comes mated with a six-speed manual transmission and a 4×2 drivetrain and the 2.0-liter MultiJet. Those selecting the 2.0 liter MultiJet engine can have it as a 4×4 model that comes with a nine-speed gearbox or choose one of the cheaper 4×2 versions that are available.

The 2017 Compass will have a five inch infotainment screen as standard equipment. However, buyers will also have the choice to upgrade it to either a seven-inch or an 8.4 inch display. The seven and 8.4 inch versions feature touchscreen interfaces that have built-in Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The 8.4 inch option has multi-touch gesture support allowing users to tap, pinch or swipe it just like they would a smartphone.

The 2017 Jeep Compass will be offered to buyers in four different trim levels. They are the Sport, Limited, Latitude and the Trailhawk. The Trailhawk models will come with the enhanced permanent 4×4 setup which offers a terrain selection system with five modes. They include hill descent control, Rock Mode, as well as a low range setting. The 2017 Compass will also have unique new bumpers that provide better approach and departure angles, tow hocks, skid plates and a ride height that’s slightly raised.

The 2017 Jeep Compass will be built at the new Jeep plant located in Pernambuco, Brazil. The price of the vehicle in the Brazilian market will be the equivalent of about $30,000. There is no word yet from the company about what the 2017 Compass will cost when it is released in the UK and other worldwide markets. Using the Brazilian pricing model, it appears that the 2017 Compass will be very affordable. That means you can go wherever your adventurous mind and versatile, nimble Jeep Compass takes you without having to bust your budget.
