Pacifica Replacing Town and Country

When the all-new Chrysler Pacifica replaces the Town and Country as one of the top dogs in the kingdom of minivans this spring, it will be as a reigning gas mileage champion. The new Pacifica shares the crown at 28 mpg on the highway with the Honda Odyssey, but plans are already in the works to improve on efficiency. When Chrysler adds start/stop technology later this year, expect the mileage to get even better. Check in with Chapman Chrysler Jeep to see when the first Pacificas will appear on the showroom floor.

Revamped Pentastar Engine Has Higher Compression Ratio

The 3.6-liter Pentastar engine has been a real workhorse for the Chrysler and Dodge brands. It appears in everything from Jeeps and Ram trucks to the new Chrysler Pacifica, but the next best thing in minivans benefits from a few engine tweaks. By utilizing a cooled exhaust recirculator to reduce temperatures and boosting the compression ratio, the new Pacifica has a Pentastar engine with more power than normal. Still, the engine runs on regular gas, not premium like some turbocharged engines require. “Such success brings enormous responsibility,” Bob Lee, head of engine engineering for Fiat Chrysler America (FCA) told “AutoNews.” “We focused our efforts on improving efficiency and providing greater customer satisfaction in a package that delivers superior value.”

Look for Hybrid Pacifica This Fall

Keep checking in with Chapman Chrysler Jeep for the announcement on when a new hybrid Chrysler Pacifica will appear. Slated for later this fall, it’s expected to have an all-electric range of 30 miles with an EPA estimate of 80 MPGe. The new Pacifica is also 250 pounds lighter than the latest version of the Town and Country, which adds to its impressive gas mileage total. “What we decided to do was support the structure where it needed to be reinforced and take away weight everywhere we could,” according to FCA chief minivan engineer Jessica laFond. “And then we just went after every ounce. By utilizing a combination of high strength steel, magnesium and aluminum at key locations, the engineers were able to save weight without losing any structural integrity.

New Minivan Five Years in Making

Chrysler has been working on the Pacifica for the past five years, looking to create a new minivan worthy of replacing the popular Town and Country. Along with excellent gas mileage, the Pacifica seats eight and offers features like leather and heated seats, a power liftgate and hands-free sliding doors. A panoramic sunroof and integrated vacuum cleaner help make this a minivan for the next generation.
